Wayland vs. Xorg on XPS 13

With my new laptop I initially used wayland but now I am mostly on Xorg. From a users perspective I noticed the following problems (daily) on these platforms:

Wayland:

  • Screen sharing does not work in a lot of apps, actually most apps. This is a complete showstopper for work and the reason why I use Xorg most of the time. It does not work for various reasons (e.g. too old electron, wrong protocol used, support hidden behind a feature flag, Firefox not supported).

Xorg:

  • Different DPI setting for different Screens do not work.
  • Fractional scaling does not work (you can only set to 100% or 200%).
  • Gestures do not work (scrolling with two fingers does)
  • Various scaling glitches (e.g. Icons wrongly sized, some apps do not respect desktop scaling)

On wayland there is hope that the last remaining problems will be fixed over time. I am not confident at all that any of the Xorg problems will be addressed ever. For now Xorg is bearable and sadly wayland is a no-go till screen sharing is properly fixed. I have hopes for Fedora 36 where things are hopefully further refined.
